About Dubai Fountain
Every evening at the foot of Burj Khalifa, the desert transforms into a stage for liquid artistry. The Dubai Fountain doesn't just spray water - it orchestrates 22,000 gallons into gravity-defying ballets, where jets soar higher than most skyscrapers in other cities. Imagine water dancing with the precision of a Swiss watch, reaching 152 meters (500 feet) into the night sky - high enough to drench the 50th floor of neighboring towers if the wind shifts.
The magic lies in the marriage of Bedouin well-digging heritage with 21st-century technology. Over 6,600 superlights paint the water columns in shifting hues, while hidden speakers broadcast everything from Um Kulthum's Arabic classics to Celine Dion's power ballads across the lake. Locals know the secret: each performance tells a story, with water mimicking everything from palm trees swaying in the breeze to fireworks exploding in slow motion.
For the ultimate experience, arrive as the sun dips below the horizon. Claim a spot along the Waterfront Boardwalk as the first notes of the evening's opening score begin. Watch the crowd's smartphones rise in unison when the initial 140-meter jet erupts without warning, sending a misty breeze across your face. The real connoisseurs book Abra boat rides during shows, floating directly beneath the aquatic spectacle as water arches overhead like a liquid cathedral.
This isn't merely a fountain - it's Dubai's liquid signature, where every droplet reflects the city's philosophy: if you're going to do something, do it taller, brighter, and more memorably than anyone imagined possible.
Fun Facts
The fountain shoots water higher than the Statue of Liberty (500ft vs 305ft) - making it visible from space stations on clear nights.
Its water nozzles can launch 22,000 gallons airborne in an instant - equivalent to draining an average American backyard pool in 3 seconds flat.
During special shows, the water forms 3D shapes like flying falcons (UAE's national symbol) that appear to leap from the lake.
The light system uses technology originally developed for Broadway shows, with 6,600 superlights that can create 1,000+ color combinations.
It performs to everything from Arabic classics to Elvis Presley - the most requested American song is Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On."
The fountain basin holds 27 million liters of filtered Persian Gulf water - enough to fill 10 Olympic swimming pools.
Engineers test new routines using flight simulator software - the water patterns are designed like aerial acrobatics.

History
Conceived in 2008 as the crowning jewel of the newly built Burj Khalifa district, Dubai Fountain was designed to surpass all existing water spectacles. The project brought together California-based WET Design (creators of the Bellagio fountains) and Dubai's own Emaar Properties in an unprecedented engineering partnership.
The construction faced desert-specific challenges: engineers developed a special filtration system to combat blowing sand, while the 30-acre Burj Lake was lined with a custom membrane to prevent water loss in Dubai's heat. Over 6,000 superlights and 25 color projectors were shipped from Germany and installed with millimeter precision.
When the fountain debuted on May 8, 2009, it immediately broke records as the world's largest choreographed fountain system. Its first performance to Andrea Bocelli's "Time to Say Goodbye" brought tears to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who famously ordered the shows to remain free for all visitors.
The fountain has since evolved with technological upgrades: - 2012: Added 3D projection mapping capabilities - 2016: Introduced the first drone-integrated water shows - 2020: Launched pandemic-safe "social distancing" light patterns
Today, this $218 million marvel represents Dubai's ambition perfectly - where cutting-edge technology meets public art on a monumental scale. It remains the only fountain where Bedouin-inspired water patterns dance alongside K-pop hits, watched by over 50 million visitors annually.
